OPNsense® is an open-source, user-friendly firewall and routing platform that combines the extensive features of commercial products with the advantages of open and verifiable sources.
OPNsense® began as a fork of pfSense® and m0n0wall in 2014, with its first official release in January 2015. The project is evolving rapidly, with a strong focus on security and code quality driving its development.
OPNsense® provides weekly security updates to address new emerging threats. It has a fixed cycle of 2 major releases annually, allowing businesses to plan upgrades. Each major release has a roadmap to guide development and set clear goals.

The project’s name comes from “open” and “sense,” meaning “Open (source) makes sense.”
OPNsense® features
The feature set of OPNsense® includes high-end features such as traffic shaping, intrusion detection and easy OpenVPN client setup. The platform is based upon FreeBSD for long-term support and through its modular design and – in house developed – Model View Controller framework the product is extendible with API functionality readily available.
The robust and reliable update mechanism gives OPNsense® the ability to provide important security updates in a timely fashion.

Our license
OPNsense® is licensed under an Open Source Initiative approved license. OPNsense® is and will be available with the simple 2-clause BSD license. We believe an open source project should provide the sources and the tools to build it.

The OPNsense project is founded by Deciso B.V. The support and history of Deciso gives the OPNsense project a stable environment. The company has a long history in providing networking solutions using open source software.
